Tier 1 University Scholarships for International Students
Canada’s educational institutions receive generous government funding and support. The country is home to several prominent universities which are nurturing skills development of future leaders.
We have highlighted some popular scholarships at Tier 1 Universities below only for meritorious students with an excellent track record of co-curricular activities.
Lester B. Pearson International Scholarship Program
University of Toronto | Canada Rank: 1
The Lester B. Pearson International Scholarship Program at the University of Toronto is intended to recognize international students who demonstrate exceptional academic achievement and creativity and who are recognized as leaders within their school. A special emphasis is placed on the impact the student has had on the life of their school and community, and their future potential to contribute positively to the global community. Awarded annually, these scholarships recognize outstanding students from around the world, including international students studying at Canadian high schools. This is U of T’s most prestigious and competitive scholarship for international students. Each year approximately 37 students will be named Lester B. Pearson Scholars.
International Major Entrance Scholarship
University of British Columbia | Canada Rank: 2
International Major Entrance Scholarships (IMES) are awarded to exceptional international students entering undergraduate programs at UBC. Students receive their IMES when they enter their first year at UBC, and the scholarships are renewable for up to three additional years of study. The number and level of these scholarships awarded each year vary, depending on available funding.
McGill Scholarships & Awards
McGill University | Canada Rank: 4
Newly admitted undergraduate students can apply to McGill’s Entrance Scholarship Program. In-course award programs for undergraduate students currently studying at McGill fall under individual faculty jurisdiction as do those for graduate students.

Additional Tuition Fees Waiver
University of Montreal | Canada Rank: 5
At the graduate studies level, scholarships are offered by Université de Montréal, by several government and para-government agencies as well as by companies and private foundations.
As an international student, you may obtain financial support in the form of scholarships offered by UdeM and by various Quebec, Canadian and international agencies. International students are also entitled to the scholarships granted by the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies except for those dedicated to Canadian applicants.
It is highly recommended that you refer to the scholarship list, published annually by the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies. On this list, you will find several scholarships appropriate for your needs. You can also apply to obtain an additional fee waiver.
International Student Scholarship
University of Alberta | Canada Rank: 6
Value: Up to $9,000; payable over four years
Awarded to students with superior academic achievement entering into their first undergraduate degree program, studying on a Student Visa Permit. Recipients will be selected on the basis of academic achievement. Should a renewable scholarship be offered, receipt of funding for the second, third, or fourth years is contingent upon achieving a minimum GPA of 3.0 on a full normal course load at the University of Alberta each year.
University of Alberta International Student Scholarship offers will be made throughout the year. Recipients will be notified of their award offer after receiving an admission offer from UAlberta.
International Admission Scholarship
University of Ottawa | Canada Rank: 7
Each faculty holds a competition with their own criteria, including a minimum admission average of 8.0 / 10. Given the limited number of international admission scholarships, meeting the minimum requirements will not guarantee a scholarship.
Your file must be recommended to the Office of the Vice-Provost, Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies, by the faculty to which you have submitted an admission’s application.
Eligible programs for the international scholarship are the same as the admission scholarship for Canadian students.
Western University | Canada Rank: 8
International students applying directly from secondary school for admission to Western’s main campus for first year, full-time studies may be considered for the Admission Scholarships below. Admission scholarships are unlimited in number and are awarded automatically in September to all qualified first-year students.
Eligibility is based on successful completion of secondary school, Western’s calculation of your final admission average, and prerequisite courses related to the program of study you will pursue at Western. A separate application is not required for consideration. Eligible students will receive official notifications about the Western Admission Scholarships in late August.
International Entrance Scholarship
University of Calgary | Canada Rank: 9
Offered annually to undergraduate international students entering first year in any undergraduate degree in the upcoming fall term who have satisfied the university’s English Language Proficiency requirement. Students entering The International Foundations Program are not eligible. Renewable in the second, third and fourth year at the University of Calgary, provided recipients achieve a GPA of 2.60 or more over a minimum of 24.00 units in the previous fall and winter terms and continue to pay an international differential tuition fee as an international student
- International students who are required to pay a differential fee and who are not Canadian citizens or Permanent Residents of Canada
- Academic merit.

Results of Euclid Mathematics Contest and/or Canadian Senior Mathematics Contest (Mathematics and Computer Science applicants only)
